I've always wondered if he took the role of Archie in "Nero Wolfe Mysteries" in homage to his dad.

If Jim had lived longer, then he and his son could have done another EQ series, this time with Jim playing Richard Queen. A lost opportunity, for sure!

I loved this show! I first caught it when I was in hs and it was TVLand. I wish they would rerun it on SLEUTH or something. It's such a great show. At least put it on DVD. It was only on for a season so it's not like they'd have to spend a lot of money putting it out!

I Totally Loved The Show, as a kid, and, would sooo love to be able to share it with my daughter. The closest thing I have seen in resent memory, was Nero Wolf, with Timothy Hutton. Suburb Television~!!! If, by chance, you've missed it, do yourself a favor, and run out and pick it up today. Ellery Queen was, not only a great TV show, but, was a kind of family glue, around our house. I remember getting to eat dinner, in the living room, no doubt, with my looking back on it, now pretty cool folks. We'd all have our dinners on TV trays (anybody remember those?) a big glass of sweet tea, in hand, waiting for Ellery to do his little famous pause thing, where he turns to the camera, and ask if; " We'd caught all the clues, and figured out the killer's identity." Then, he'd solve the crime, for us slower witted folks. Ha Ha~!!! Now, that was great television~!!! That little Post Modernism camera wink-wink-nudge-nudge thing, totally made the show. Well, for me and my folks, anyway. I'd been about 12 years old, at the time, the show originally aired, and now, years later, it still makes me smile, like a goof ball, when I think about it. Come to think about it, that was one of the only shows, I can remember, where we all ate, crouched on the couch, and not, elbow deep at the kitchen table. I'd bet that Ellery, changed the eating habit of a lot of families, way back then, and could again. I know sitting in front of the TV, eating dinner, is supposed to be bad.but if, its done with the whole family, it can't be too bad, can it? I remember us, trying to figure out, "who done it," before Ellery did, by bouncing theories off one another. Sometime we'd get it, other times, not so much. The thing is; it was real quality family time, stuffing our faces, scratching inside of our brains, sloshing down a tea, so sweet, it could have thrown Willy Wonka into diabetic shock, and grinning from ear to ear, as we, made fun of each other's "who done it picks." I can't think of another TV show, that so involved it's audience. Ellery's simple turn to the face the camera, and ask, "ask if you got it, yet?" takes you, from being just a plain ole' TV viewer, to being a real participant, in the story's conclusion. Genius, plain and simple~!! Now, if I can only find it on DVD, I could pass those happy TV tray moments, to my daughter. Well, hears to hope, and a nod, to the late Jim Hutton, for being MY Ellery Queen. Cheers, to you sir, you are missed~!!!

Great to watch, very entertaining. I wish they had programs like this nowadays. Right now they are showing it on UHF(KDOC Channel 56), the same channels that most of the PBS stations are broadcast, here in Southern California. My only way to see it currently.
Yeah I do hope that some day we get a DVD.

Some wonderful person taped all those KDOC broadcasts and apparently made them available for download, because a super friend of mine downloaded them all and then burned me a copy. They are in .avi format, but they play on my DVD player. It was so nice to see them almost complete again (KDOC cut out the "Tonight on Ellery Queen" teaser) rather than A&E's butchered-for-commercials version.

I found these too! Matter of fact, after downloading to AVI I was able to transcode them (using Nero) to the regular VOB format that will play on any DVD player. It is so nice having them again! I was watching the pilot just last night and am continually amazed at how detailed it was and the in jokes like Inspector Queen sayng nightly news at ten at night is a dumb idea because who wants to hear about the problems of the world before they go to bed. Priceless!

Same story in my house. My step-father and I didn't get along too well, but when it was Ellery Queen night, we were planted on the couch together trying to solve the killer's identity as the clues rolled in. Always keeping in mind it was never the obvious choice so sometimes we had some pretty crazy theories 🙂 But when Ellery laid it out at the end, we were usually turning to each other and saying "of course! It's so obvious now!" Great nighttime viewing before being sent off to bed. And one of those childhood memories that always brings a smile.
R.I.P. Jim Hutton many, many of us loved your work. No one could have been a better Ellery.

I'm pretty new to the show - RTV just started playing it. I love the concept - you're invited to solve the mystery with them! If only it could have lasted longer!

I got it last weekend and have watched the first two discs so far. Already this is my favorite TV show I own on DVD. Great writing and acting. I probably missed about half the episodes when the show first ran back in the 70s, so I really look forward to seeing all of them now.

Watched the show back in the 70's, when it originally aired.
I was a big fan of that show (who wasn't?!).
I remember goading my dad into buying me a "
                                ragg wool hat
" out of a Cabela's catalogue we'd received in the mail, because it looked just like the one Jim Hutton wore on the show.
I still have that hat. Sadly, I'm no Jim Hutton (or Ellery Queen!). 😞
I see its out on DVD now.
I'll have to check that out. Have only seen one or two episodes since the show stopped production.
What in the wide wide world of sports is'a goin' on around here?!
