Then Basil would have been up early in the morning making sure that the German would not bring towels out to the sunbeds in order to reserve them for themselves.

A stereotype of German tourists is that they put towels on sun loungers by the pool very early in the morning, thereby taking up all the best ones before other guests have woken up. It was particularly widespread in the 80s.
