I remember when George made his video will and gave Florence a trust fund and after he got done showing it to her she got all mushy and George hated it when she got that way. He liked it when he called him names and made fun of him. Do you think its because George remembered where he came from from and did not want to hire someone who just said "yes sir" all the time.

I think you may be on to something there. Plus, if he let Florence go, he would have Louise to deal with and you know who would win.

But don't you remember George hired Prudhomme for a short time when Florence left? He loved what a proper respectful maid she was. He also loved the eggs she made. She was definitely a better cook than Florence!

I think he enjoyed the verbal sparring, and considered her a worthy opponent intellectually and as good at the snappy comebacks. Nobody else could give it back to him nearly as well, or challenge him in that arena, and he knew it.
Just watched the Season 8 ep where the Jeffersons and Willises tried to have a little surprise party for Florence, but in getting her to come up to the Willis apartment, they asked her to serve the meal, deeply hurting her feelings. She showed up sloshed to tell them how hurt she was, then lurched about hugging them all when she realized her mistake.
I fully expected George to fling her off, acting all annoyed, but he stood there and let her bear hug him for a few seconds. Even Louise and Janet were cringing away from Florence's boozy breath. :^D
And they always had each other's backs when one was facing something serious and scary.

In real life a maid who talked back and was often lazy would've been fired but this is NOT real life. It's a sitcom. They needed the back and forth between George and Florence.

Plus Louise usually stuck up for her.

                  Obvious, you've never been married.

I once thought that Marla Gibbs could have played Louise and Isabel Sanford could have played Florence. It would have made sense because Gibbs was much closer in age to Sherman Hemsley. But I guess Sanford played Louise on "All In The Family" so it made sense to keep her in the role.

I agree He would not admit it, but having grown up where to survive African americans had to please employers, mainly white employers He admired her refusal.
Think of the episode where she acts subservient and he cant stand it.
