Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Barry Lyndon

    dawnbaxter34 — 10 years ago(February 10, 2016 12:27 PM)

If you ask me, the film should have been about Captain Feeney instead of Barry Lyndon.
After the robbery, the movie should have ignored Lyndon and followed the further adventures of Feeney and son.
Mr. Barry, in my profession we hear many such stories. Yours is one of the most intriguing and touching I've heard in many weeks. Nevertheless, I'm afraid I cannot grant your request. But I'll tell you what I will do. I'll allow you to keep those fine pair of boots which in normal circumstances I would have for myself. The next town is only 5 miles away, and I suggest you now start walking.

      I agree.
The Genteel Bastards might have been a good title.

        THE Capt. Feeney?
        One of my fave scenes.
To whom do I have the honor of speaking?
Crooks had manners and style in those days.

I like it when Feeney refuses Barry his horse back, on the account that Feeney and son had to be faster than their 'clients.' Clients being those that they had robbed. I can't make out how Feeney got ahead of Barry to ambush him in those woods. Feeney and son had been still sitting at the table, leisurely drinking as Barry rode off.

I just couldn't fathom a criminal to be that talkative and polite. It was one of my disconnects with reality with this film.

It might be a type of humour that you're not use to. I like pieces of irony like that.

I thought that scene was awesome. I found it so hilarious. It had to be the most polite robbery in history.

The story of the two highway men would have made an amazing movie, to be sure. Pity that Kubrick didn't make it.
