It is another one of those movies at the time that is anti authoritarian where something bad, usually murdered and in this case again, of the anti hero or the guy we root for.
This was the trend for movies of the late 60's/early 70's.

It's a well-made movie, but I don't enjoy it at all. I can't root for a dude who sleeps with teenagers just because he's anti-authority. There's almost no one to like or cheer for in this movie. People fell for this movie because it's anti-authority. Problem is McMurphy is a worse person than Ratched.

Have you by chance seen a movie that came out about the same time called Scarecrow?
Also somewhat anti authority.
About a couple of drifters who meet and their bonding and adventures.
I prefer that one.

Yeah, it's underrated even though it has the two greats of Al Pacino and Gene Hackman.

Driving someone to suicide is far worse than having sex with a girl who lied about her age, are you serious? Murphy was a delinquent but he wasn’t a psychopath like Ratched was

She didn't make Billy do ****. McMurphy directly and purposefully hurt people and is a diddler. Then the dirtbag faked insanity because he's too much of a pussy to serve his time. This series of events led to Billy's death.

Did you not watch the movie? Ratched brought up Billy’s mother as a trigger because she knew it would make Billy hurt himself. She was jealous that McMurphy had cured his stutter and lack of confidence by getting him laid, so she caused him to kill himself and didn’t care.
McMurphy didn’t hurt anyone other than when he strangled Ractched and took away her voice, which was actually a good thing. And he wasn’t a “child molester,” he slept with a teenage girl who lied about being 18, which could happen to any red blooded male.

Do you not understand the film? Ratched knew Billy was mentally ill and could hurt himself if she toyed with his illness. That’s really not a hard concept to grasp. Nurse Ratched drove a young boy to suicide because she couldn’t stand the fact McMurphy was actually helping him, and that she would lose her control over him.
Yes, McMurphy was convicted of “fighting.” A lot of men tend to fight each other and get physical. That doesn’t make them evil people. It sounds like McMurphy just enjoyed being scrappy with other men who wanted to fight him. And yes, he slept with a girl who lied about her age, happens to a lot of dudes.
Is this really the hill you wish to die on?

Debatable. Either way, she obviously had no care for his health and used his mental illness as a weapon against him while being purposefully ignorant of any consequences. Then she had zero remorse for his death. Which is why Ratched is one of the great movie villains

Nothing “professional” about weaponizing a vulnerable mental patient’s triggers against them. What she did would be enough to have her disbarred in a civilized society. A nurse should never cause a patient to harm themselves. Why else do you think she would bring up his mother, the source of all his trauma?
