Hated it.

I'm with the OP here. We just had the horrible experience of having had to get a court order to get my mother-in-law checked in for a 10 day psych hold because she was a danger to herself ("they are going to take my brain out"). I now see not only that this movie was not only utterly unenjoyable, but a deterrence to those who desperately need psychiatric help, as they fear the "evil nurse Cratchet".
And The Godfather and the first sequel totally rocked.

This movie is based on a book that is not about a psychiatric institution in 2015. The novel is set decades ago, when the mentally ill (especially those without financial means) were treated very differently than they are treated today. Put the movie in the context of the time the events occur in the novel, and you might find it more realistic.

"Hated it."
Agreed. No redeeming qualities.
There are several subjects Hollywood just cannot get right. Mental illness is one and being gay is another.
They're either caricatures or victims - rarely any authentic characters that the audience can really care about!

Respect where it is due. I have been "hated on" for posting dislikes for films that the whole world loves, so you will probably get some nasty sh*t in the future. I personally think OFOTCN is a masterpiece and cannot comprehend why you dislike it so much. I would love to convince you otherwise, but that is not going to happen. Continue to promote your opinions. It makes for a diverse forum.

I thought it was fine. I live in Oregon and it was fun to see the local landmarks. One trivial thing does bother me - when they return from the fishing trip, the fish they are displaying seem to be freezer-burned, not fresh fish caught on the trip

This movie does not do a lot of spoon feeding, a lot of things you have to figure out for yourself. Either way if you don't like it then I guess it's just not your cup of tea but don't say it doesn't have a story.

As you are the sole arbiter of what is good, entertaining, exciting, interesting and funny, the opinions of millions of movie-fans are wrong. Thanks for correcting the error we all made - I'm grateful to you that you are here to set me straight when I mistakenly like a movie that is not to your taste - er, I mean, not good.

While I wouldn't go as far as saying it's one of the worst, I too struggle to see why it is in the top 20 of ALL TIME. I watched it recently and am still trying to figure out why it's held in such high regard. I don't know.
