he walked out of the house after leaving his environment for the first time and not letting his parents be the first ones to touch him. They deserved at LEAST that much. What a bastage!

I can understand why he didn't. They would not have been happy to see what he'd done. In their eyes, very likely they would have shouted at him that he had just thrown his life away (because there was not, and likely still isn't a cure for this disease). Look how overly protective his father was throughout the entire movie.
