This is by far Brian De Palma's best film and in my opinion probably the best horror film ever made. Everything about it is so exquisite, beautiful, scary, and tragic. I love it when horror film gets existential and uses horror as metaphor for real things. I would say that this film at the very least is in the top ten best ever (along with the original Texas Chainsaw, Eyes Without a Face, original Halloween, original Nightmare on Elm Street, The Exorcist, Santa Sangre, Inland Empire, Hellraiser, original The Haunting, and the original The Fly).

It's good, but I'm not even sure it would be top ten. Much of the "horror" was lightened up with other almost-comical stuff.
That "Donald Duck fast-motion" sequence at the tux shop never made any sense and seemed out of place in a movie such as this. And Margaret White was a bit cartoonish up until the "whiskey on his breath" monologue toward the end.

Carrie is a great film but I can't say it's in competition for best horror film of all time.
        Maybe in the top 20.
