My all-time favorite performance in my all-time favorite movie.
Next stop: Shelly Duvall as Millie "We're having bbq chicken melts for dinner!" Lammoreaux!

I'd rather skip that and go straight to chocolate pudding tarts for dessert.

The most unusual pie I made was a vinegar pie. It sounded so different and I love anything with vinegar in it and so I made it and it was actually pretty good.
Pie-making repertoire. I like the way that sounds. Sometime I would like to make a banana cream pie.

Yes, poor Millie.
I think the hardest part to watch was when Millie comes down to the pool in her yellow jumpsuit and those assholes are talking about her like she's not even there.
Though "uh-oh, it's Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a GREAT line.
I think I would have enjoyed living at the Purple Sage apartments. You, Cheeky and me could be neighbors and we could alternate hosting dinner parties. I would invite Millie in a second. Though if Pinky came over, Millie would have to be with her. I can just see Pinky going through the medicine cabinet.
I think if Millie had just a couple people on her side, she could have developed as a person.

Pinky would annoy me more than Millie I think. She was even more clueless than Millie.

Yes, and she could broaden her horizons more with the right minded people around her. We could have done the job.

For sure. Pinky was struggling to emerge from the embryo.

Yes, I think so. The three of us are sympathetic to her and like her. And if there was something we felt like she wasn't quite getting, we would be sensitive and kind towards her and would know how to approach things without hurting her feelings.
I think I would actually enjoy Millie's company. She could learn how to be herself around us because we would be our fun, open selves with her and would not judge her. And I don't know about you and Cheeky, but I enjoy playing Scrabble.
And I think Millie might have a sense of humor somewhere. At the very least, we would make her laugh.
Of course, Millie is a good, loyal individual and she would feel bad if we didn't allow Pinky to join us. I would make a blueberry pie for Pinky and let her eat that while she sat in the corner and watched us eat our dinner. You know how Pinky likes pie. She'd probably eat the whole thing in one sitting and five minutes after she was done, she'd throw up, blueberries all over the place.
Millie would be embarrassed and she'd say to Pinky "I swear I can't take you anywhere. I told you not to gorge yourself on the dessert!"
But you know that Millie would watch any movie that we picked out. And then when it came her turn, she would pick out the movie. I wonder what kind of movies Millie likes? Romantic comedies? I don't think she'd like horror films. Cheeky, do you think Millie has seen "Pillow Talk"?
It is such a testament to the quality of this movie and Shelly's characterization, in particular, that we could be moved to speculate what Millie would actually be like if she were a real person.

I wonder if Millie might be a bit homophobic though. She wanted men to be attracted to her.
If it was the late 70's, we couldn't watch a vcr. We would have to have a time portal to bring things through it to make Millie more aware of newer technology and films available. I would show her Grease though and Cheech and Chong Up In Smoke from a year later than 77.
I would ask her to watch
Ordinary People
, because then she might not snap at Pinky to make her attempt suicide again.
I hope you would make me a blueberry pie too Mr. H. I wonder if Pinky is much of a sharer. And we know she likes to read others secrets so she may not be trusted.
@Cheeky
, you may have to be a mother figure to Pinky, because although she's a older teen, she has the mentality of a 12yr old. You would be good for her. Millie would be too snippy and controlling. Pinky might even make you a dress.
I would try to make Millie understand that she aint' going to be fulfilled by creepy straight men. Poor Millie would be used by men only her whole life. They wouldn't understand her.

Those are all excellent, relevant points you make, Toasted Cheese.
Millie probably would be on the homophobic side. But much of that might be due to the fact that she has been a slave to the popular opinion. We've seen that Millie has it in her to do the right thing. Like when Willie is having her baby, Millie has no reservations about coming to Willie's rescue and wanting to help, and even though she does not have the experience or the skills necessary for a successful delivery, it is not for lack of trying. Millie has a lot of decency in her and I think that she could outgrow the homophobia.
Yes, the late 70s didn't have VCRs. I didn't think about that. So instead, we can project ourselves back into time and imagine what viewing fare the ABC Friday Night Movie of the Week might bring us. It's the summer of 1977 and I know what movie I am going to imagine when it's my turn to host the dinner party.
Of course, I would make you a pie, Toasty. Do you like blueberry pie? If your favorite is cherry pie, then I imagine you would like blueberry pie. There is a custom here (I think mostly a mid-west thing) to have your apple pie with a slice of cheese. My grammy used to do this and I was never that much into it. I didn't like my pie with cheese on the side. Do you think you would like this, Toasty? Because I know you love cheese.
Yes, I can definitely see Pinky not wanting to share. Ha! An astute observation on your part, Toasted Cheese! She'd gobble down five pieces of pie and leave one piece for somebody else and think she was being thoughtful and generous by doing so. (Pinky has fewer social graces than Millie, who at least
wants
to do the correct thing.) And I don't think she can be trusted, hence her rifling through my medicine cabinet. Over the course of time, Pinky would come to know what medications every resident of The Purple Sage apts. was taking. And of course her memory is very sharp and every time she'd see a neighbor walk by, she'd immediately think of which drugs they had in their cabinet. Also, Pinky cannot ever be given any real power as she would not know how to handle it.
"Ordinary People" would be good for her to watch. Millie would probably become completely engrossed by the entire film and she'd be thinking about it for days afterwards. (The movie might even shake her to the core. Who knows?) "Up In Smoke" is going to be a more fun viewing experience and Millie might actually be able to relate to this particular social class and the sloppy feel. I can picture her at a party and her hanging out with Chong and the two of them flirting with each other. Because C&C are not like the other asshole snobs and they would both feel comfortable around Millie and not judge her in the slightest.
@Cheeky
, you would also be a good maternal influence on Millie, whose own mother didn't even want her. Your warmth and patience would be just the thing that Millie needs in order to come to know and accept who she is as a person. Furthermore, you would educate Millie on sex as she is only slightly more knowledgeable on the topic than Carrie White and you would make sure that she understood that a woman cannot simply take the pill "when I know I'm going to do something". Yikes! You might even be able to empower Millie to the point where she asks the man to wear a condom as pregnancy is not the only thing that Millie needs to be concerned with.
LOL @
"Pinky might even make you a dress."
Anyway, for my dinner party, the ABC Friday night movie of the week is "Airport 1975", which Millie loves and she'd wonder out loud how exciting and glamorous it would be to be a stewardess, wearing those pretty outfits and serving alcoholic beverages to passengers flying 1st class. She might even get to date the cute co-pilot!

You guys put a lot of thought into that
I would be happy to teach Millie about taking the pill as it's good for your bones to take hormones
Shelley was so slim and she had beautiful skin
