Her words, as she hugs her mother are "I'm sad Momma. They laughed at me!"
    She says "I'm
    scared
    momma. They laughed at me."
The word "scared" changes the dynamic of what you're saying. Sounds remorseful to me.

She says "I'm scared momma. They laughed at me."
This is funny. After seeing this film literally hundreds of times, this is one line that is not clear to me.
What I hear is "It was bad, momma. They laughed at me."

This discussion made me quite curious, so I looked at IMDb Quotes page for this film, plus 2 other sites.
They all claim the quote is "It was bad, Momma. They laughed at me."
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

I've always heard "scared" and still do. Just watched it again lol. It still sounds like "I'm scared momma".

she doesn't seem to be feeling remorse about what she's done. Her words, as she hugs her mother are "I'm scared, Momma. They laughed at me!" It just sounded more selfserving than sorry to me.
One could argue she's on the verge of (if not experiencing) a nervous breakdownculminating a lifetime of incessant abuse.
That's not usually a time people tend to focus on others.
            Sorry
            .

The book was much better. She left the prom and finished off most of the town after the school. THEN she went home with the sole purpose of killing her mother.

I saw her crying as "What did I do to deserve having the pig blood poured on me?" The sad part is that she was constantly punished for things that she can't control. She can't help it that her mother is a Bible holding wacko. She couldn't help it that she got her first period in the locker room, and she never received sexual education about how to handle it. She couldn't help it that the coach punished the girls by making them do her after-school boot camp style exercises. For those reasons, I feel lament for Carrie, and I can understand how the pig blood was the straw that broke the camel's back and suddenly used her telekinesis for vengeance.

I agree with all of this.
Also, I think its possible that Carrie suffered a mental breakdown and let her powers go wild, not really putting much thought into exactly who was the target. I think at that moment, she felt everyone was against her and she was just fighting back at everything.
She seemed to be in a trance after the blood dropped and not her usual self at all.

While I think you're correct on Carrie having a mental breakdown and letting her powers go wild, I think she specifically targeted certain people. Norma, Mr Fromm and Mr Morton, Miss Collins.
I guess she also could have targeted some without much thought, but those who had directly wronged her in her eyes were definitely targeted.

you all have to understand that she just discovered this power. and when she did discover it and tell her mother she was refused any sort of 'lessons' to learn how to control this!
Remember Luke being sent to the Degobah system so that Yoda could continue his training? Stuff like this is not learned naturally. you need to practice.

Carrie did learn how to control them. When she asks her mother if she can go to the prom, and her mother, after her lecture about boys smelling the blood, walks away saying "The rain is coming in. I've got to close the windows", Carrie says "Momma, I'll get them. Please sit and talk to me." She then closes the windows.
Carrie has clearly learned to control her powers. When and how is unknown and irrelevant. But since she has found what her powers are, she now can control them.
"If I concentrate hard enough, I can move things."

Are you the expert on psychic phenomena?
You should stop with stupid comments. Or better yet, do some research

I think you are the only one.
the tears were long awaited of 'I fought back because of what they did'. They did some horrid things to carrie over the years but the prom prank was just disgusting and barbaric. they totally had it coming.
This reaction often happens when people who have been the subject of bullying and tormenting finally fight back. When I moved from Long Island to Westchester I was made fun of because of, you name it I wasn't pretty enough, I wasn't cool enough, I wasn't rich enough or poor enough for it to matter, I wasn't enough of anything except of one thing annoying [to them]. Now three years later I am I'm middle school and I gather some friends. I was telling a funny story to some of my friends and then we went our separate ways to go to class. as I turn down the hall one of my 'tormenters in elementary school' turns to my ear and laughs really loudly. before I even realize what was really happening, I slap his face away from mine.
I take a step back and stop in my tracks and then burst into tears. my friends were still in the area and they take care of me. some other teachers witnessed and asked us separately what was going on. he told how his friends just told him a funny story and he was still reacting to it and I told how he has been bullying me for the past 3 years so what the hell am I supposed to think he is doing?. the office just chalked it down to an accident but the justice was when I got home.
                                  my guidance counselor [who happened to witness it too] called my mother just to let her know and said I got him good. {ha ha!}
                                  sometimes enough is enough!
and I would love to see you use your newly found powers with no official lessons into controlling your powers AND emotions while you use them.

If she stopped crying when her mother showed up, then maybe it's because her mother doesn't like criers.
