Would it be bad to shoot a feature film in 1.66:1?

I have a script I want to shoot, and I want to apply for distribution after, hoping it will take off. I kind of like the 1.66:1 aspect ratio but would it be a let down to distributors if it was shot in that one?
I read it is for European movies more so, but if I am marketing to European distributors more, would it be a good aspect ratio then? -

Oh okay, thanks!
However, it seems that the 2.39:1 aspect ratio is the most popular one and that maybe 80% of movies are shot in this ratio. So if I were to use 1.66:1 instead, would that decrease the chances of the movie being picked up, since it's the less popular aspect ratio? -

Maybe, but it's an indie film and if it's good enough, you never know. You're not looking at breaking into worldwide superhero level box office earnings, I hope. Break even or a little more and get people looking at you.

When cinema projection was in 35mm, 1.66:1 aspect ratio was a popular European film ratio. However, most cinemas around the rest of the world were either set up for 1.85:1 flat projection or scope 2.35:1 and some had 2.20:1 set up for 70mm presentation. Any foreign film that was shot in 1.66:1, would have more than likely been screened in 1.85:1 in most cinemas around the world away from Europe.
Now with digital projection, streaming and blu ray discs etc, any ratio can be presented as intended without any projection hindrance of having to change lenses, aperture plates and even adjust masking stops as the side edges are clean. Do it if that is your mise en scene.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?
