Dark Passage

Vincent Parry has just escaped from prison after being locked up for a crime he did not commit - murdering his wife. On the outside, Vincent finds that his face is betraying him, literally, so he finds a plastic surgery to give him new features. After getting a ride out of town from a stranger, Vincent crosses paths with a young woman who lets him stay in her apartment while he heals and continues to try and clear his name.

Struggling artist Geoffrey Carroll meets Sally while on holiday in the country. A romance develops, but he doesn’t tell her he’s already married. Suffering from mental illness, Geoffrey returns home where he paints an impression of his wife as the angel of death and then promptly poisons her. He marries Sally but after a while he finds a strange urge to paint her as the angel of death too and history seems about to repeat itself.

Yes, not the usual obnoxiously cutie child actress. I loved her in The Curse of the Cat People. So believable as a regular kid.

(Robert Rossen, 1947) 8/10 rewatch
Charley Davis wins an amateur boxing match and is taken on by promoter Quinn. Charley's mother doesn't want him to fight, but when Charley's father is accidentally killed, Charley sets up a fight for money. His career blooms as he wins fight after fight, but soon an unethical promoter named Roberts begins to show an interest in Charley, and Charley finds himself faced with increasingly difficult choices.

YES i watched it earlier this year (before i made this thread) and i agree, it's really really good. very dreamlike, well, nightmarish even and i second your recommendation here. it's a must see.

It was the only Val Lewton horror I hadn't watched, so I corrected that right before Halloween. Great film! I'm intentionally watching lighter things so far this month… other than Frankenstein of course
