Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Film Noir

    Manton29 — 9 years ago(February 04, 2017 12:06 AM)

Hey fellow dark alley dwellers, since this place is condemned, I thought I'd just slip by and flag for newcomers here that there are a host of fantastic films noir that slipped into the public domain and so can be watched online and/or downloaded legally at archive.org

    • they have a collection dedicated to noir, including detour, doa, scarlet street etc etc. I had posted a list of them on here but it dissapeared into the fog and shadows long ago. Dig around and you won't be sorry.
      Here's the link:
      https://archive.org/details/Film_Noir
Sometimes I just need a good noir to remind me that the world isn't such a bad place.
      Cheers,
      Manton

      We know archive.org. 🙂 It's pretty good.

            What, all of them?
No offence, but I can't quite accept you as the entire board's spokesperson.

In case you hadn't noticed, we have very few regular posters here, you can almost count them on one hand.
I have no desire to turn this into a big discussion, the Noir board always was (and is) one of the most friendly boards on imdb, and I'd like to keep it this way until the end.
              Peace out.

I'm as friendly as can be, and I'm very familiar with this board*. Not everybody who reads posts. I think taking the opportunity to let anyone passing through in on the public domain noir thing was a pretty helpful thing for me to do. Obviously you thought it was a good idea to point out to me that my post was redundant, thank you very much. Friendly? Yes it's a friendly board and this is a friendly chat to the degree that we all have a sense of humour and are flexible adaptable self-aware people. Right?
                Cheers, and peace.

Indeed. Thanks, man. Although I was familiar with archice.org, still I'm an example of a board-wonderer who came here looking for something interesting of the sorts, you know, before the end.

You're most welcome. The link posted may not link to a full list of the noir films on there and also often there are multiple copies there with differing picture quality so you might need to dig around a bit to get the best of the site noirwise.
                    Cheers,

Thanks for the info! Probably there are lurkers who might not have known this fact until you mentioned it. Thanks for taking the time to mention it.
Some of these films are posted on their IMDb home pages, too.

One I like on the archive is Quicksand with Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre and Jean Cagney - sure you must have seen it but one to check out for those who haven't.

Yep. Andy Hardy finally faces the real world, ha ha!
Another thing you can do is download them and and re-edit them, cutting out scenes or moving shots around etc., for those who like to mess around with iMovie etc. I did that when I was trying to get the hang of editing and needed something to work with.
                              Cheers,

Yes, the archives is great although some of the films on there I question their public domain nature since a few are rarely put on those DVD multipacks. I would also mention a plug for Dark Film Mysteries 11 movie set which look much better than the Mill Creek ones and the selection is cherry picked almost spotlessly although there is room for a Part 2 with DOA, The Chase, The Scar, The Great Flamarion, The Sleeping Tiger, Guest in the House, Suddenly and other PD titles.

Hi finslaw, RE public domain or not issue, the way I understand it is certain films' public domain status has been legally debated with cases of titles that were considered to be in the public domain later made officially copyright protected and vice versa.
