I read the Heinlein book a few years ago and hadn't heard of this movie at the time. Reading the description of the film, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of the themes seem strikingly similar. I recently gave the film a shot, but it just didn't work for me.

Walter Tevis wrote it. He was an alcholic and had several moves as a child from/to Kentucky etc.
It is bizarrely semi-autobiographical.
