The film is abusive in itself

Pretty much alot of the abuse at the hands of Sybil's mother didn't make it into the TV movie. If you read the book, it tells you more detailed events that Sybil witnessed or was subjected too. If they had put everything in the TV movie that's in the book it would of been a mini-series! I read the book and years later they discovered that the lady living as a recluse was the actual Sybil that the book is on, but her name was not really Sybil.

Come to think about it, the extreme abuse seems far-fetched and totally over the top. Even if half of it were true, people would have talked
I guess it's reassuring to believe that but sadly, you are wrong. Especially back then in a small town. People stayed out of each other's "business".
Even now, with many "safeguards" in place, there is always abuse, even worse than the one she suffered, that goes on for years.

One of Shirley Mason's art students & some people she grew up with, figured out she was the real Sybil, after reading the book If it was all made up, that couldn't happen. If she later stated that the worst of the abuse never happened, I have to wonder if she was really totally cured and maybe that was stated by an alternate personality

Who said it never happened??
I am quite wary of all this media blab about everything being made up.
Its very very suspicious that all these so-called claims only came out after
every single person
who could defend it has passed away.

I agree. We can't really know for sure, but I don't necessarily believe that it was all made up or partly made up.

Actually the whole thing was a hoax. Sybil nor anyone else ever had so-called multiple personalities. The real Sybil was prompted by her doctor to produce them. Then once the snowball of a book deal, movie, etc. was rolling the doctor told her if she keeps saying it's false she would lose her free therapy.
So even though the book and movie says Sybil was "cured" and lived happily ever after, in reality she was dependent on the doctor for the rest of her life.
This is just one more proof that doctors do more harm than good,
