Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Brady Bunch Variety Hour

    texasturkey — 18 years ago(January 29, 2008 04:47 PM)

Why wasn't Robby Rist, the actor who played Cousin Oliver invited to join the cast for the Brady Bunch Hour? He was a regular cast member that became an addition to the series in its last season. Was it because 7 is an odd number and they wanted the Bradys to be paired off during the show? Why was Robby Rist (Oliver) excluded?

Around that time, Robbie Rist did a show that lasted about as long as "The Brady Bunch Hour," "Big John/Little John." This show was on NBC on Saturday mornings, and it was about a teacher who, after drinking of the Fountain of Youth on a vacation, changed from 45 to 12 unexpectedly (Robbie was the 12-year-old).

you are exactly right. It was a weird show but Robbie was the 12 year old.

Oliver was the Ted McGinley of the sitcom he was added in hopes of being cute enough to help save the sinking ratings. Obviously it didn't pay off. The Variety Hour didn't have any involvement from Brady creator Sherwood Schwartz (which could be why Robert Reed liked this show better), and the Krofft brothers, who created the variety show and had previous involvement with the six Brady Kids through other projects, probably didn't even think about including Rist.

"The Brady Bunch Variety Hour" sucked enough without a jinx on the set.
Ann B. Davis was on the show. I think in the big dance numbers she was sometimes paired off with a guest who was appearing on the show. And sometimes she danced alone.

Songwriter Paul Williams appeared once on the show as a guest. He looked a lot like Robbie Rist.
