I noticed that the ambient noises you hear in the background on the futuristic sets came from the original Star Trek series.

Yep, noticed that, too. Space 1999 used a couple of them also, once Fred Freiburger decided he needed to kill a second series.

Actually, Gerry Anderson apparently decided to kill Space:1999 by hiring Freiberger in the first place.
