What became of Mark Savage?

Anyone know what became of the actor who played 'Gripper'? I remember the guy who played Zammo saying during an interview that Mark used to get beat up in real life and he quit acting altogether. Anyone know anymore?

When the BBC were showing reruns in the early '90s, the presenters would sometimes talk to cast members afterwards, and mention what happened to some of the others. I remember one time when the actor who played Pogo Patterson, said that Savage had serious problems when he left the series, as people attacked him in the street etc. (Even as I youngster, I could separate fact from fiction, but there you go!) Anyway, on top of this his mother was ill, and he spent his life savings on her care before she died. This left him penniless, and out of work for a while. I think he's okay now.
If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to correct me.
