I was 15 when I first saw this in 1980 and it sure looked like a lot of my friends' houses.

Yeah that was a pretty good capture of '70s middle class living. Doesn't it look just awesome? Things had character and weren't all cookie cutter like they are today. I actually want my next house to be a built in the '60s house and have a lot of '70s look to it. My 11 arcade games and pinball machines (early '80s games) will be dotted all around in it.

I babysat in dozens of homes just like that in the mid- and late 1970s. I'll never forget the smell. Not a bad odor, just a characteristic smell. Cooking, laundry detergent, fruit juice and (often) cigarette smoke.

I'm pretty sure they're wrecks for the purpose of showing us two adults whose lives are in turmoil. If you listen to the director commentary Spielberg often refers to the 70s as a different time for him as an adult and dealing with adult issues. He even sounded a bit regretful that he painted Roy with so much selfish and immature coloring while portraying him as the protagonist who leaves his family behind to fulfill a personal pursuit. Spielberg basically says that he couldn't make a movie with a character like Roy again.

                  Spielberg doesn't do director's commentaries.

I'd rather a house built in the 70s that's dirty, than the superficial and depressing looking 2015 new houses.

Next time you look at someone's vine or selfie, look at the aesthetic horror in the background. years from now if not now, one will laugh at those huge oversize chairs, the hideous strapping vertical blinds, Tuscanoid tiles and Home Depot wrought iron light fixtures.

Most middle class homes now are much the same. too much stuff; not enough storage space. Good furniture, quality flooring, high end appliances, etc all cost money. Rich homes look amazing, spotless, sparkling, but average, middle class live in a mix of IKEA, hand-me-down, outdated decors.
