When my father took me to see this movie, he allowed me to buy one item at teh concession stand - I chose those chocolate covered ice cream balls (like mochi) that they used to have at theaters. I ate one during the previews, and then the movie started.
I was sucked in and enthralled - completely inthe world of the film.
When the credits ended, and we got up to leave the theater - my mind still going over the events of the film I had just watched - I realized that I had allowed the ice cream to melt all over my pants.
Few films have been able to immerse me so much. -

I felt the same way as the OP when I saw it over and over and over again at the end of 1977 and into 1978. I liked it better even than Star Wars, and believe me, that is saying a lot! I saw it enough times to be certain I never fell asleep from boredom watching it, not even once. I figure OP and I probably are better witnesses to our experience than you are with your assumption that ALL people HAD to have fallen asleep from boredom simply because YOU find the movie boring.
