When my father took me to see this movie, he allowed me to buy one item at teh concession stand - I chose those chocolate covered ice cream balls (like mochi) that they used to have at theaters. I ate one during the previews, and then the movie started.
I was sucked in and enthralled - completely inthe world of the film.
When the credits ended, and we got up to leave the theater - my mind still going over the events of the film I had just watched - I realized that I had allowed the ice cream to melt all over my pants.
Few films have been able to immerse me so much.

It's more likely that you simply fell asleep in this boring movie.
Really, though, it's OK. But not worthy of all the praise and high ratings IMO

And what's a film that you do consider worthy of high praise? Let me guess independence day.

I felt the same way as the OP when I saw it over and over and over again at the end of 1977 and into 1978. I liked it better even than Star Wars, and believe me, that is saying a lot! I saw it enough times to be certain I never fell asleep from boredom watching it, not even once. I figure OP and I probably are better witnesses to our experience than you are with your assumption that ALL people HAD to have fallen asleep from boredom simply because YOU find the movie boring. 😉

Cool post - this was the only film I ever wanted to (and did) go see over and over when it was originally in theaters. I bet I saw it 15 times during its initial run.

Spielberg has a real knack for keeping you engaged in his films. A real talent.
