I saw this for the first time last night. I'm not a fan of musicals and I don't listen to this type of music. So, even though I'm a big Scorsese fan, I have avoided this movie my entire life. I was 16 when it came out, so I've avoided it for a long time.
I couldn't have been more wrong - this movie was great. Liza Minnelli was amazing. With all the paint-by-numbers movies that get made, it is refreshing to see something so unique. Martin Scorsese never disappoints me. I should have known better than to avoid this. -

I've always wanted to see this and I just saw it on MGM HD and wow, I loved this film. I became a Minelli fan from Stepping Out and I've made it a point to watch her filmography and I wasn't disappointed. Loved Deniro in this too. Damn was he a fox back then.

I don't get the bad reviews; I'm not even a fan of musicals and I was utterly astounded. The directing was probably, dare I say it, the BEST Scorsese did in the '70s and better than the work he did in the 2000's, even more impressive than his only great film so far - in my opinion, The Departed. No, this is not a better film than Taxi Driver or Mean Streets, but it's actually one beautifully shot film and better than either films. The colors, lighting, and atmosphere in the beginning was great! I loved everything about it. Though, in my first view, I hated the Liza Minelli musical sequence I knew the whole thing was a throwback to '40s and '50s musicals, plus Liza WAS amazing for what is was, but I disliked it; and for the first time in a Scorsese picture (before anything from the 2000's with DiCaprio), I just wanted the thing to move on quickly. Now, the whole film makes up one of my favorite Scorsese films, and personally one of my favorite films from the best decade of cinema.

This is now my favorite Scorsese film. I loved how the beautiful sets, high production values and great music fell to the wayside every time Jimmy and Francine were on-screen together. Great chemistry! I admit Jimmy was an beep and I'm glad Francine decided the relationship could never succeed between them in the end, but the whole of the love story felt so true to me. I mean, I don't consider myself an beep and I certainly never treat women the way Jimmy treats Francine, but anytime I've been madly in love with a girl, it always ends up failing for some inherently unclear reason burrowed deep down between us. I loved this film!
In my opinion, one of the great, undeclared masterpieces.
