Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Orca

How ridiculous is that? When the fetus falls from the other female whale, the Orca sounds like a dragon or lion roaring!

Not ridiculous. Just an honest effort to put more emotion in the scenes. Could they have used a better sound for an effect? Truly, but still what they did use works if you understand why it was used and focus on the effect it trying to achieve.

They do that in a couple of those later Jaws movies too. The shark sounds like Spot from The Munsters.

Hollywood biology 101: All big predators roar!
Same with the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. We don't know what sound dinosaurs made, but modern reptilians are all pretty silent. It doesn't make sense for a hunter to make lots of noise.

Yes, I understand they make some sounds for other reasons, but not when they are hunting.
What I mean in the context of being a predator making noise is unpractical. In all the movies when a dinosaur or scary creature enters the scene it always roars first (some times even before you see the dinosaur you can hear him stomping the ground) This is of course a narrative device to show the audience there is a threat.
In nature if a predator announces itself like that it would scare away every possible prey in the area. They have to use stealth right until the moment they jump for the kill.
