Was whaling really this unregulated in the 70's?

That any idiot can just grab a harpoon and without a permit shoot at a pregnant whale.

Orca captures happened so often that one population of orcas in particular, known as the Southern Residents, are now endangered, largely because of the number of young whales taken from their population for marine parks.
They were even allowed to harpoon the orcas to catch them - this is how SeaWorld obtained their original/first "Shamu". A mother orca was harpooned but died, and they took her calf, who became Shamu.
Orca captures weren't very regulated back then, for sure. In contrast, they're now illegal in most places. -

It was a different time. One of the reasons Orca was panned as a film was because of its pro-whale perspective if that's what you want to call it. Jaws did not give a damn about WHY the shark was killing. The creature was shown as a relentless killing machine with no mercy, no reason, and no remorse. Orca was different in the way it presented its killer whale. The whale who was very intelligent had reasons for its killing and people as well as critics thought this was ridiculous. Back in 1977 it wasn't like it is today where people actually care and respect animals as well as acknowledging their intellect. Back then the mentality was 'Who gives a damn about some whale?'

Orca was filmed near St. John's Newfoundland. Yes as late as 1972 they were still harvesting whales in Newfoundland. I went down to the docks, small town not St John's, and watched them cut them up. Took some pictures. Also watched them filming the movie and took some super 8 movies of that. My friend built the shack that falls into the water on the edge of the bank. Got Luciano Vincenzoni's autograph at the premiere in St. Johns. He was kind of startled that I asked. Lol.
