SNOWBEAST in my opinion is a remarkably riveting, suspenseful, and well-made monster movie for television. The Golden Age of Made-For-Television movies spans 1969 to 1974 which demonstrated how well-written scripts could be adapted to television with economical production values but still produce a quality product. Made-for-television movies continued after 1974 to 1979 or 80 but as the production values increased, the scripts and stories seem to decline in drama quality. SNOWBEAST was an exception. The movie could arguably have been released on movie theaters as one of the many horror and monster flicks that were popular in the late 70s to early 80s. Indeed, the movie seems to show the director was aiming for movie theater quality. With just a little more, such as the requisite t & a for the timeperiod horror slasher and monster flicks it would have qualified.
The monster in the high Colorado mountains is no doubt an abominable snowman but how it got there was never explained. It bears a close resemblence to the snowmonsters in the 1980 classic, "The Empire Strikes Back". This is before the age of CGI, and I personally find it refreshing to see old-fashioned makeup and monster suits. This movie's abominable snowman isn't too bad, given the white imitation fur monster suit, prosthetic claws and the monster face makeup. Decades later, I still enjoy watching this movie.

Pardon me, sir, but you have no taste.

I love this movie too. And I also agree that the period from the late 60's to the early 80's was pretty much the Golden Age of the Made-For-TV Movie. There are some real classic scary movies that came out during that timeeverything from possessed houses and dogs, to vengeful ghosts, to rampaging monsters, psychos on the loose, vampires, witches, and all other things that go bump in the night. It was a fruitful time for television that is now, sadly, a bygone era. I'm glad I grew up during the late 70's and early 80's, and I feel sorry for the kids of today who will never know how much fun network TV used to be.

Snowbeast not only had "good" ratings, but HUGE ratings. It was actually the Number One show for the week ending May 1st, 1977. What a great Top 20 for that week . . . classic shows, awesome memories. Check out this link:

Thanks for the link. I wonder why they never made a sequel? When something rates that well there is usually a follow up.
