Her death was related to drugs.
I don't recall if it was an OD or if they just took a toll on her body that gave out from them.

She got involved with soft porn and then eventually into some stuff that got her into trouble with the producers of Different Strokes because she was making a porn parody of her character.
I don't know much about it as it's not my tipple but it was relatively well known news at the time Warren

I looked it up and according to Wiki:
She had to leave Dif. Strokes because she got pregnant.
She posed nude in Playboy and as you mentioned did some soft porn.
She died in her sleep when she took too much of something.
Some say it was not meant to be while others think it was suicide.
Overall I think she had a sad and troubled life with her struggles of trying to remain as an actor and not having a stable romantic relationship though she was involved with a lover at the time she died.

So, again, something from a long time ago that I had stored away under decades of dust which I had to blow all away to verify my thoughts.
This film was renamed Kiss
but was the start of her turmoil into her very final stages of having lost all hopes of reclaiming her earlier sanity.
The version available for general purchase is heavily softened/censored for the home entertainment market but the big push came from it being called "Different Strokes" and featuring Dana Plato as a central character.
There were rumours she was involved in further 'productions' and occasions which were right into the illegal and that's why some people think she took her own life.
I can't remember exactly where all this information was shown but it was a documentary type affair and it was prior to 9/11 if that helps you search further Warren

Doing a Google Image search of "Dana Plato Nude" brings up all kinds of images.
Some of her pics in Playboy to stills of "Kiss" to probably a look alike doing hard core pics.
She was another one of those sad child actress stories whose fame faded when the time on the show was over and taking on just about any acting job to stay with acting which were few and far between.
Gary Coleman is an even sadder case where his parents stole pretty much all the money he earned on DS and another one who died when he shouldn't have.

There are lots of sad things associated to the cast of Diff'rent Strokes after the show. Childhood fame + the 80's seems like a bad mix for just about everyone who can claim both.
It's about time o'clock for the early 2000's stories of this type to start showing up by the busload (If they can get past the MeToo crap) but I don't know much about popular kid's TV actors since the world went so diverse within its multiple channels and programs
