Even if they were going to put him in prison regardless, which is likely.
They were telling him he would be on the plane home if he co-operated. Even if that was a lie, he had nothing to lose by just co-operating. It's not like he could have possibly gotten home from running away.
Just because I'm not on THEIR side, doesn't mean I'm on YOURS.
