- The Governor thought highly of Benson and probably gave him chances no one else ever did before.
- He had a few girlfriends throughout the run of the series. They were either mentioned but never seen or on there for one episode.

Benson was a butler on the Sitcom SOAP, not on this series.
The Governor's mansion had no butlers or maids.
(1979) Benson starts as head of household affairs. Simply meaning, he's in charge of anything involving the mansion and it's staff. Gatling's cousin Jessica recommended him for the job and he obviously impressed the Governor.
So much so, that in the 1981-1982 season, when the original State Budget director was impeached or arrested, the Governor had to appoint someone new to the psot and he felt Benson was the best choice and was someone he could trust.
It wasn't until the 1984-1985 season, that after Gatling's LIEUTENANT Governor is caught taking bribes, that he decides to actually run in the next election for the position. Which if I recall right, the Governor said he should.
Benson got elected by the voters because he ran an honest and very strong campaign.
He wasn't just handed the position because Gatking likes him. 'Good' and real politics don't work that way.
As for the series end, as mentioned man times Benson would
have eventually become governor, had there been 1 or 2 more seasons.
My guess is you've only seen a few of these
shows and know little about it,except what you've seen.
The Benson DuBois character is an intelligent man who worked his *** off over the
course of his life. From a laborer, to a butler and up to the positions I just talked about.
He is not a 'jive dude'. Jive Dudes only have 2 things on their minds, money and women.
Benson EARNED every bit of it, without ever asking anyone for a handout or a free ride.
Oh and lastly, your above comments are ignorant and racist. Escpecially in an era where we have an African American President. You make it sound like if a black person gets a job as a butler or maid, that's all they'll ever be.
You,therefore, are showing yourself as an
ignorant person and ignorant people do not get ahead in life.
Lastly, it's only a TV show.you take it far to seriously.
