This movie grabbed my attention when I was kid and has never let go. It's got it all: slapstick comedy, AIRPLANES!, that Spielberg soft focus feel, Belushi and Ackroyd, AIRPLANES!, Wendi Jo Sperber, Frank McRae, girls in garters and curls, John Williams' score, etc.
Some of the deleted scenes got shoe-horned into the dvd release, others work really well. I liked the scene with the tank crew running through Lulubelle's engine start procedure (accurate, of course) being tucked in right before Loomis going through his checklist in the twin with Donna.

No need to apologize. It's a fantastic movie with an absolutely amazing cast. Watching it for the first time in probably 12 years. Good stuff. How can anything with Toshiro Mifune not be great?!?

There is so much I like about this movieit just could have used some trimming imo. They really could have ditched the whole Tim Matheson/Nancy Allen subplot as that really slowed things down imo.
This film really has a certain undefinable charm you dont see anymore, to me its reminiscent of Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.

This was probably the crudest part of the film also, though still enjoyable to watch these 2 attractive actors get it on together. However, their plot point led to the awesome Belushi fighter plane attack over the streets of Hollywood.

It's one of my guilty pleasures with Howard The Duck, Last Action Hero, Batman (1966) etc.

I always felt like 1941 was judged unfairly. I just watched this again last night, and (as always) was thoroughly entertained. This film almost literally explodes with energy and enthusiasm. Certain scenes STILL had me laughing uncontrollably!
Yeah sure, the movie is uneven and overstuffed. But when it works, it's fantastic! I think some of the finest moments in Spielberg's filmography can be found in this film.
I love it as much now as I did when I saw it in the theater as a kid back in 1979.
Meanwhile, my significant other thinks it's literally the worst movie ever made.

It was funny when I was 5.
It is not very funny any longer, less so that I am now involved with quite a few WW2 veterans and I do concur with the major Hollywood stars like John Wayne who turned down roles in this film, that it is quite a slap in the face of the real service men and women
And yet, I still own a copy of the film, watch it regularly and even have both the standard and extended motion picture scores!!
                    Go figure!!

I absolutely agree, I feel the same way .
I'd even go as far as saying this movie is almost up there with Dr. Strangelove .

Don't apologize. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I nearly shat myself from laughing when I first saw it in the theatre back in 1980. And I still can't not watch it when I come across while channel surfing.

You are not alone. I like it to. Its is a bit unfocused and messy with all the plots that's going on, but it does contain some very funny scenes.
And the cast is great, I dont think there have been a movie like this with so many stars in one movie.
And the fact that Christopher Lee speaks German throughout the movie is a reason alone to see 1941. I find it hilarious for some reason!

I liked the film also Saw it originally in the Theatres (twice I think). I've seen it a few times on regular Broadcast TV and cable when they have shown it, but it's been a few years. The DVD has been on my wantlist for quite sometime.
I can understand a little bit of people being offended by some of the racial slurring (for the Japanese and Germans) but you have to remember also it is A PERIOD PIECE. People talked like that back then plus the Japanese were THE ENEMY at the time so it expected.
As to the humor, I don't see how people can say it isn't funny. There are many funny parts. Granted if you watch the movie a few times in a row it won't be funny anymore but that is part of what comedy is all about.
                            Hmmm let me think

I am fifteen, and watched it for the first time tonight. I had never heard of it before, but when i saw that Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were in it, I had to watch it. I absolutely loved it! It kept me laughing the entire time! But, then again, it is a type of comedy that has a limited audience. I was really surprised when i went online and read that is was a flop.
Well, you can't please every body, but it sure pleased me 🙂

It's a crazy ride of a film. An action-adventure-comedy that goes from one extreme to the next. I'm not a big fan of it, but all my friends loved it.

Loved this film as a kid and I still have my original VHS copy of it on my shelf with all my other vintage tapes. It's one of my guilty pleasures as a truly cinematic gem.
John Belushi and the entire cast were fantastically hilarious.
This film is how I would imagine a live action Bug Bunny movie would be.

This is a very funny movie if you aren't hopelessly politically correct and can't laugh at something that is funny, period. Schindler's List? Can't stand that over-rated film. Give me this one any day.

Agreed. It was great for it's time. And I took my girl to see it as a date movie at the Roxy cinema in Parramatta, Sydney Australia in 1979 and saw my ex girl there. Great memories.
