Alien is a better film. Carpenter is one of the most satisfying entertainers around, though. For a film that matches Alien in terms of complexity and subtext, you need They Live.

The Thing is a great film. There aren't many SF films I would say is better than it.
But Alien is one of them.
My Mt Rushmore of SF films would include Alien, 2001 and Forbidden Planet.
The Thing would be just below that. Along with the original The Thing From Another World, a truly excellent adaptation of Who Goes There?.
