About six or seven years ago, I actually saw a presentation on this movie at a literature conference (Pennsylvania College English Association). The talk focused on the style of the movie, the simulated documentary feel. I don't remember much else other than wanting to see it because it looked more extreme than anything I had seen at that point. I asked the guy how to obtain a copy, and he was very evasive, but I persisted, and he referred me to Diabolik DVD. I don't know what he was afraid of, I was worried Diabolik was some sort of super underground black market thing.

I did a Google Search for popular cult movies. After reading a lot of comedies and oddities in many of these lists, Cannibal Holocaust kept showing up as an alternative to other popular cult films, so I had to check it out.

It's been so long that it's hard to really remember. I'm going to just assume I was lead to CH after spending time as a kid watching horror movies and finding clips from Faces of Death on a site someone who I shared a computer with torrented (or clips people just called Faces of Death, but had no real relation to the movies).
What made me watch it? I was a curious little one. I only got to about the 30 minute mark when I had to turn it off. It wasn't because I was shocked or upset, but I had younger cousins running around the house, so I couldn't risk having one of them run by and see an animal death. I forgot about finishing it until a few years later.

Growing up I was an always a horror fan from when I was 7 or 8 and just started watching the Universal films to when I was 11 or so when I got heavily into slashers. I heard about this film when I started High School, I heard it was really violent and controversial so I looked into it and got creeped out by the impaling scene, and I quit looking at it for a few years.
By my senior year I was over the hump of excessive gore and my interest in this re-grew. I watched the Cinema Snob's review and loved it, and finally decided to watch it. Then oddly enough, one of my best friends in high school that I played Football with shared an interest in this movie too. He never watched it but knew the name and seen some clips, so we gathered up our friends and all watched it after we graduated. It was hilarious, because all my tough guy football teammates got creeped out by this movie, except me. They all made it through the movie but some got sick over the animal killings and the gore (I got the uncut version thru Netflix.) They all despised me for an hour or so, then thanked me for getting this film as a few even liked it. This movie can still shock and awe after all this time, that's amazing.
I still need to buy the DVD though here sometime soon. This is on my favorite film list as well. -

I found the DVD at a FYE from my mall against all odds. I never expected to find it there (I have the deluxe version) or anywhere in my area for that matter. I remember going to the register to pay for it and the guy behind the counter made a comment on the movie, though I can't remember what he said verbatim. I think he said it's pretty messed up and that's about it.
It had been well over four or five years since I first saw some of it online to when I watched it Christmas Day of 2010(?). What a neat way to finish the holidays!

Pantera documentary. The band is walking through the woods somewhere, and they hear crazy nature sounds, and Philip Anselmo says, "Cannibal Holocaust!" So, I looked it up.

I was watching a doc on John Wayne Gacy and it stated he went to "The Music Box" (an old movie house )in Chicago Ill. I went to their web site and a TWEET said"..often cited but harder to watch, Cannibal Holocaust". I cut and pasted and Googled and found it on Youtube. The serendipity John Wayne Gacy, The Music Box and "Cannibal Holocaust."

Thanks to my dad I've been a life long horror fan. I kinda feel like a hipster d-bag saying this, but in college I moved away from mainstream horror and discovered the world of exploitation and grindhouse. One I came across the title and the phrases "the most disturbing movie ever" and "banned in 67 countries." How was I to resist. I remember the first time I watched it I couldn't look away and was so frankly frozen in shock that I let the the credits roll and stared at a blank screen for a full 10 minutes. Then I spent a considerable amount of time on google trying to convince myself that it wasn't in fact real. No movie has shocked me as much since and I don't think any ever will. I even laughed at the Human Centipedes claim to be the most disturbing movie of all time. those who think that's disturbing are so naive haha I love this movie but am always very careful to recommend or even mention it. It's certainly not for your average person.

I first heard about this on an IMDB forum around 2004. I just watched the uncut version for free on the internet. Total waste of 90 minutes.

Around 2006 I was becoming very interested in 70's cult/exploitation films. I stumbled across an article that detailed this movie and how graphic and shocking it was. Naturally, there was some elaboration on the animal killings which made me hesitant about ever seeing it. Anyway, In 2007 I saw that it was on sale at JB HI-FI and it reminded me about the article I read the previous year. I eventually bought it after mustering up the courage to take it up to the counter.
I think sheer curiosity made me want to watch it. -

Managed to "find" it on 'not totally legal' VHS at a car boot sale back in the day when my whole life as a late teenager revolved around getting anything that was frowned upon.
It was a crap copy & I didn't get it again until I found it released on DVD, so I bought it, along with "Last House on the Left" and "I Spit On Your Grave".
Ahhhh - those were the days!

I remember seeing the box at Jill's Laundromat back in the 80's when every store in town was stocking up on VHS. Laundromats, bait shops every store/shop that had room seemed like they were renting tapes. Jill's was the only place in town that carried more extreme stuff (always in a separate room) like Faces of Death, Caligula, etc. but they wouldn't rent it to us because "the sticker on the box says you must be 18 to rent" and we were like 13-14 years old.
I kind of forgot about until the internet came into existence. By then I had heard enough about it to not want to see it until, finally, last Saturday night I watched it. -

I was watching some youtube videos at school and This was a top 5 on gore deaths in cinema.
I forgot the name of the video so I wasn't able to find the name of the movie for a long time.
Later I was watching Hostel part II and in the bonus features Eli Roth mentioned the movie and then I looked it up and sure enough, it contained the clip I saw.
What made me watch it was to see how it was set up.
I bought the movie, but to this day I cannot watch the whole movie in one piece. -

I remember back in the myspace days, people would argue about "most" disturbing. Someone uploaded it into 12 parts on youtube (back in 2006?) Which got taken down.
