Every time I see this movie I cry, no matter what age I am at the time. It's so distressing, and beautiful, the love between the boy and his father and so damn sad and tragic.

definately agree, I could watch it now and I'd cry. It's too much. The relationship with his dad reminds me a lot o my own relationship with my father. Excellent, poignant film making.

I'm an 18 year old male, and I'm not ashamed to say that I cried many times during this movie.
That part when Billy was in the grandstand and he sees TJ had me in a pool of tears. I love the exchange between the two as well.
Billy - "You know what you are?"
TJ - "A pain in the ass?"
Man, i was crying my eyes out.
Okay, i admit it, i do feel a little ashamed.

I saw this movie in '79 with my parents when I was eight. I think I was the only person in the theater not to be crying, because I was too immauture and embarrased to cry in front of my parents, so I remember holding it in. Having long since gotten in touch with my emotions, yes this is a quintessential tearjerker, a beautiful and sad movie that will affect you. I cry just watching the two scenes I've seen posted on YouTube.

Your definately not the only one. I saw this movie when I was about 10 or 11 and cried my eyes out. Every friend I knew admitted that they cried too. I told my wife about this movie, she would like to see it but Im honestly afraid to look at it again because I'm 36 now and I dont want her to see me cry over a movie, it would destroy my tuff guy image. lol

I'm 36year old bloke and I bawl everytime at this film.Never at any other. ET got me when I was a kid, I get a tear at the scene in Crash where the Iranian goes to shoot the Puerto Rican, and Dancer in the dark moves me.but I don't actually shed tears like this filmPowerful stuff. How's it only rate as 5.8?
If a film is so moving, surely it should be a 10.. I guess alot of blokes won't rate it highly through some sort of embarrasement complex, alot of people will cite it as forumlaic or manipulative.but surely if a film raises this much emotion its got to score highly.
I certainly have never heard of anyone that has seen it and hasn't been affected. Anyone that says they haven't is either a liar or emotionally retarded!

Good, God, no! I STILL cry when I see this show. Especially since my father died almost 5 years ago.
To me, that last 14 minutes is the saddest scene in movie history I have EVER seen.

I was 7 or 8 when I saw it. At the cinema exit, the whole street was crying out loud. It was like a darn funeral. I haven't seen anything like that since then. Hundreds of grownups sobbing and crying marble-size tears over a movie.
                                Never be complete.

I remember getting ready for a date in high schoolI had all my makeup on, started watching this movie, and when the guy arrived, I didn't have any makeup left from all the tears coursing down my cheeks. I have no doubt I'd cry again today at 34.

I watched this with my dad, brother, and uncle.
My dad is a big bad ex marine.
My brother who tries to be the machoist person on the earth
My uncle who is very similar to my brother.
And myself, at the time, a young teenage female.
All four of us cried, sobbed hysterically. That little kid was what did it when he was screaming, "WAKE HIM UP! I WANT CHAMP!"
Absolutely heartbreaking. I'm acting getting worked up just thinking of that part in the movie.

Ah ok, well I didnt cry not sure why. If it wasnt for Jon Voight I wouldnt watch this movie more then 1 time. Ricky totally overracts IMO, and I can think of MANY movies that gets to me more then this one. I just think the ending is kind of over the top.
