Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Vengeance Is Mine

Some angry guy kills some random people for no reason. We watch his whole life in sections, all his love affairs, fights with mom and dad, pointless stuff like that which drags on and on. Now he's on the run because he killed some people and wants to be free. Now he's having more complex love affairs with random women. Now he's killing more people without any reason, including the only people who trust and help him. Now his dad & wife are throwing his bones away.
The last scene was beautiful. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the 2 hours that came before it. The acting was enough to keep me awake, but I'm pretty disappointed in the whole story, it seems like it's just a random series of events which fails to explain anything about the main character.
~ Observe, and act with clarity. ~

Vengeance Is Mine is based on the true story of a Japanese serial killer and is reputed to be highly accurate, eschewing dramatism in favor of simple reenactment. As such I found it quite fascinating, though a bit "bloodless" compared to other Imamura works such as The Ballad of Narayama and Kuroi Ame.

I thought this movie was incredibly enthralling. I can see why someone might find it boring but it kept me interested all throughout. I'm definitely going to check more of Imamura's stuff.

I remember farting during this movie, and I really enjoyed it. The movie not just the farting. Rock on!

Imamura wasn't seeking to explain, or worse, provide justification for Enokizu's horrible crimes. He wants you to see violence in the most detached and objective way, with little drama or even much action, precisely so you would ask "so what's the point?". What is the point of Enokizu's violence? Is there a point for any kind of violence at all? If you are seeking a film which provides excuses for senseless violence, something is wrong with you and not with Vengeance is Mine.
