Brian Keith - who on earth could believe him as a Russian?
Natalie Wood - playing uptight characters just makes her look old. She needed more personality in her parts, more of her own spirit, to offset the fact of being 41.
Karl Malden - should never have worn a moustache.

i think the moustache was essential in one scene. He wore the same hat and coat that Mike Stone wears in Streets Of San Francisco. You wouldn't want to mix up the two shows.

I think they were aiming for one of those all star cast action adventure thrillers, which is why there were a few parts that were miscast.

Brian Keith was reportedly a last minute replacement for Donald Pleasence.

Keith played a Russian leader also in WW3 with Rock Hudson. he speaks fluent Russian so, I'm not sure why he doesn't fit.
