If you like these Burt Reynolds-type of country-western movies, this one is great on its own (even without Burt being in it). But what makes this movie a classic in its genre is the presence of the greatest bad-guy character actor ever on film. Of course, I'm talking about Big Bill Smith.
The fight scene at the end gets my vote as best fight ever on the screen, can anyone think of a better one? No spoiler here, you'll have to watch it.
William Smith makes just about any movie one to watch. How about when he takes his shirt off to prepare to fight Clint. Watch Eastwood's face. He actually REALLY looks scared! I would be too if a guy that menacing was looking at me with 18 inch guns and a face that could kill by just looking.
I've been a Smith fan since the early 60's. This is one of his best roles, though a bit out of character by playing someone who isn't exactly a totally bad guy (though he isn't exactly a good guy either!)
If you've never seen this movie, and just want to sit on the couch and get some great entertainment, comedy, and light-hearted action, definitely catch this one. I think it's better than the Burt Reynolds c&w flicks. -

Actually, this sort of role is what Big Bill Smith was made for: semi-bad, semi-good. You'll recall that when this movie was made, he was fresh in the minds of American TV-watchers from playing "Kimo" on the last season of the great show "Hawaii Five-0". Big Bill was a hallmark of '70s low-budget cinema (before there was "direct to video") and always played it with 'panache.'

He always did play the bad guy in a lot of the TV shows that I remember watching when I was growing up as a kid in the 70's and until I was a teenager in the 80's.
Dedicated to USA UP ALL NIGHT and the fans of the show!

Like you I've been a fan of Big Bill Smith since the 1960s when he was one of the leads to one of favorite TV westerns,Laredo. Whatever he's in I try to catch no matter how big or small the part is,although I always want it to be a large role for him. He's best known for playing nasty, tough villains of course. But he's also played the good guy at times such as Texas Ranger Joe Riley in Laredo.Anytime I see actors who are playing the part of a tough guy villain or tough guy hero I inevitably compare them to Big Bill.Few ever rival him in my mind.

The script originally was intended for Burt Reynolds. Reportedly, Clint Eastwood was nervous about doing a comedy, and contacted Reynolds for advice, as Reynolds had had a lot of experience doing comedies. Both would later co-star in the period cop comedy City Heat around six years later.
