In my opinion, way cooler than Han Solo or any other character in 70's & 80's sci-fi.
Exhibit 1 - His introduction in the creepy, derelict city of vice (with incidentally, what appears to be either a living skeleton hooker, or a robot hooker that ages!!). His tired, world-weary ennui is really unusual for this kind of film, and his line about sleeping with his back to the wall and eating serpents has a weird kind of resonance. Also, the strange emphasis when he says that he's all that's left in the city, apart from the "lower forms".
Exhibit 2 - His fabulous ship with the two lights behind him in the cockpit, as well as the great shape of it, like a meaner, leaner Cylon ship from original BSG.
Exhibit 3 - His cold, calculating killing of the Malmori raiders.
Exhibit 4 - His conversation with the two (admittedly annoying) young kids on Akir "I was never that little" Class!
Exhibit 5 - The blue necklace thing he wears - I want one!!!
    "In your face, space-coyote!!"

His costume is great too, not unlike that of Han Solo in the Empire Strikes Back. Its amazing to think he's killed off so quickly. He must only be in the film twenty minutes or so.

Gelt was badass. The irony that he had fabulous wealth but was considered an enemy and a target for death anywhere he went was a nice touch. I guess when you kill for a living you do leave a trail of very angry relatives.

Gelt was indeed quite the cool bad-ass mofo. "I don't like anyone behind me."
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
