Oh man, I was the same! I saw this film during a midday screening when I was seven or so, and the Cowboy dying just shocked the bejeezus outta me. I sat there for the rest of the film with tears in my eyes.
After a diet of Knight Rider, A-Team and Battlestar Galactica, this film introduced me to the idea that sometimes the good guys get killed.

What are you people talking about? This film is three years before the A-team.

Since he didn't go into any details. It might be that he saw the movie at age seven on television during the time the A-Team was airing.

I actually have a friend that at the time said "GP did a better Han Solo than Harrison Ford did." Meaning GP was truer to the cowboy image than HF was.

I was more effected by the death of the Nestor which has it's arm cut off.
Sybil Danning nearly turned me straight.

Yep, that made me sad. But when Gelt went down, I was sadder.

Gelt was the best character by far.
I loved his speech about eating snakes. That stuck with me for years and is the main reason I am not a highly paid assassin. And when they buried him with a meal I was a mess. Me snd mate couldn't stop talking about it in school the next day.
And St Exmin was really cool aswell. I'm not sure I understood why she was so fascinating tome at the time but a recent rewatch made it clear.

When I saw this as a kid, I was really upset when Cowboy died. Watching it again today, I was really moved when Gelt died and Shad had a full meal buried with him to honor their bargain ("That was our arrangement - a meal and a place to hide")

Actually, I think that he knew that he wasn't coming back. He said farewell to the Akira woman that he befriended and I think they both knew that he was going off to die. Cowboy was honorable enough to go help his outnumbered comrades, despite the fact that he didn't want to fight (but he came anyway). His ship was basically a lightly-armed freighter and wasn't a match for the TEN nukes that were thrown in his direction by Sador. But at least he took out a couple of fighters before he bought it. And he went out with class.

LOL When this came on TV almost 30 years ago, I watched the scene where Cowboy's ship crashed and in the naive optimism of a 7 year old, I thought "He just might be still alive amongst that wreckage"
