It was an inside joke from the writer Brian Doyle Murray. He came from a family with a lot of kids, including his brother Bill. They were Irish Catholic and didn't believe in birth control, so they just kept popping out kids.

Oh FFS that was part of the joke.
They had so many kids that he did not know all of their names.
How can you not get that?

Caddyshack is based on Bill Murray's life growing up. Like Danny, he was a working class kid from a very large family (nine kids!!) who worked as a caddy when he was younger. I don't know if it's up on the web, but in his interview with Howard Stern from a year or two ago he talks about it. It was very surprising to hear, because like everyone else, I just thought the scene in the beginning was just "comedy", but no, it was a parody of Murray's childhood.
