for me, Caddyshack wins hands down!! I like the occasional Adam Sandler movie but he basically plays the same person in every film.
        Lets build a snowman!

When Caddyshack came out, it had stuff in it that was considered pretty edgy. The candy bar in the pool, teenage drunk vomiting, and RODNEY! My dad took me cuz it was R rated, and we both about peed ourselves, and went back to the theater two more times during its run.
Animal House and Caddyshack laid the groundwork for Happy Madison, which I also enjoyed.

No point in even asking this question on the "Caddyshack" boards.

Caddyshack has the home turf advantage on this board.

Caddyshack is the best, Happy Gilmore doesn't even compare to Caddyshack. I Caddyshack you have the Murray bros., Chase, Dangerfield, Knight. The cast was perfect; and perfect comedy is what we got. It is my favorite comedy, and always will be.

They are similar in that both purport to be comedies centered around golf. Caddyshack was both funny and groundbreaking try to find something similar that predates Caddyshack while Happy Gilmore was well Adam Sandler playing Adam Sandler playing golf.

Caddyshack, but I do like Happy Gilmore.
Caddyshack had an overall stronger ensemble. Chase, Murray, Knight three of the greats. Even if you consider Sandler a great (debatable, but I can see it), the rest of the cast can't measure up to the Caddyshack guys. Julie Bowen is smokin' hot, Carl Weathers is a kick, and Christopher McDonald is ok, but overall just not as strong.
Also, both films are about how respect for others and social class do not correlate, but Caddyshack is much better at it. The plot might meander, but it does a great job of getting it's point across through different characters in different ways. HG is slicker and tighter, but it's more clumsy in it's themes (yes, I used themes when discussing a Sandler movie). Sandler beats you over the head with his "blue-collarness", but the movie doesn't really address the issues in any kind of realistic manner. Meanwhile, Caddyshack is much more real in the way it addresses social class, racism and even religion.
It helps that I worked in the golf industry for a time. Caddyshack, for all its slapstick, rings far too true in many ways. You would think some of the dialogue was over the top. Lines like "Some people just don't belong", "The Jew, the Catholic and the Colored boy", and many others you would think are just in there for effect, are actually spot on. I've heard things very close to this IN RECENT YEARS. In short, the movie is not only funny, but it "gets it". It gets the issues it is lampooning and it manages to do so in a truthful way.

IMHO, 'Happy Gilmore' is a better movie in terms of storytelling, but the performances in 'Caddyshack'are in a class of their own.

HAPPY GILMORE is funnier but for repeat viewing it's CADDYSHACK.
CADDYSHACK has the hot babe and better soundtrack.
