How did Dennis Franz ever get another acting part?

You really can't complain about the quality of Acting in a DePalma film for the simple fact that it's ALWAYS terrible. I take it with a grain of salt. His work is about Style. Always has been, always will be. Elaborate setups, lighting, use of music, his famous Split Screens, Long Shots, Strange Edits etc etc ALL take priority over the Acting Chops in his films. Carlitos Way is without a doubt his most balanced film. Still maintains his Visual Style(Without going overboard as he usually does) and we get some really solid performances from start to finish. I have a love/hate feeling with DePalma. He's certainly made some great stuff, Dressed To Kill being one of them but he's also as bad as it gets. It's nothing new though, as many people seem to feel this way about him. There's no doubting his contribution to Cinema but some of the worst acting I've seen has been in his films. It just takes a back seat to the rest of his process.

Franz performance was over the top. But pretty much everything in this movie is over the top.
I think Franz played it exactly the way de Palma wanted it. If you don't like the performance, blame de Palma, not Dennis Franz. -

The only problem I had with his character was his choice in wardrobe, with the leather jacket, unbutton shirt and tacky jewelry you would think he was dressed to go out to a 1976 disco club.
We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.
