    Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Elephant Man

    AardvarkRatnik — 9 years ago(January 27, 2017 06:34 PM)

    When will the stream be aweary of flowing
    Under my eye?
    When will the wind be aweary of blowing
    Over the sky?
    When will the clouds be aweary of fleeting?
    When will the heart be aweary of beating?
    And nature die?
    Never, oh! never, nothing will die;
    The stream flows,
    The wind blows,
    The cloud fleets,
    The heart beats,
    Nothing will die.
    Nothing will die;
    All things will change
    Thro' eternity.
    'Tis the world's winter;
    Autumn and summer
    Are gone long ago;
    Earth is dry to the centre,
    But spring, a new comer,
    A spring rich and strange,
    Shall make the winds blow
    Round and round,
    Thro' and thro',
    Here and there,
    Till the air
    And the ground
    Shall be fill'd with life anew.
    The world was never made;
    It will change, but it will not fade.
    So let the wind range;
    For even and morn
    Ever will be
    Thro' eternity.
    Nothing was born;
    Nothing will die;
    All things will change.

      Very sad news indeed and another tragic loss from the world of acting.
      Particularly his performance in this very movie. A movie I have only ever been able to watch once in my life, because I found it so emotionally draining. I literally wept tears by the end of this movie. It is a 10/10 masterpiece.
      And yet, now he has passed on, I feel compelled to watch it again, to remind myself of why I hold this movie and his performance in such high regard. I will watch it again I think

        I agree with your post as well as your sentiments. However, I've been able to watch The Elephant Man many times due to Hurt's brilliant performance. Yes, it's draining but the joy I receive from watching Hurt and Hopkins play their scenes to perfection moves me.
        I truly feel Hurt should've won the Oscar for this performance. Though DeNiro did give an excellent one too. I rarely buy blu ray imports but just had to purchase the Digibook of The Elephant Man. I keep hoping Criterion will release this.
        Such a wonderful actor. He'll be truly missed. Thank God for being able to view his many many excellent films at home. RIP Sir John Hurt.
