Why do they have to constantly make fictional movies of things that really happened?? Schindler's List, Boys Don't Cry, this, all these movies are based on things that really happened but are fictional versions. They need to make a movie where it's the REAL thing instead of adding fictional crap in there. We all know he wasn't kidnapped, and that abusive drunk trainer was really his friend, why couldn't they make it like the real thing?? Studios get in trouble for that too.

The studios and producers' number one goal is to make money. And if they deem that the film in question is not entertaining, the script will never be bought and the film will never be made. If you took everything by account, most films would not entertain and so, it is a business decision to have to fictionalize some stories. Of course, there are other people to think about (including family) when doing this, but films were invented to entertain. That's just the way that it is.

There are several excellent documentaries about Mr. Merrick, I think the reason most "fictionalize" true stories is because the true story may not be exciting enough or dramatic enough to make a good movie, and so the writers fictionalize in order to tell a larger truth. Or at least that's what I used to think. Now days Im pretty sure it all has to do with money and wanting to tell a good story to get butts in the seats, truth be damned.
