I've never really "cried" during a movie, maybe been choked up or watery eyed, but just watched this for the first time and had literally had tears rolling down my cheeks. And not only just once or twice. This got to me multiple times throughout. What a spectacular and moving film!

It takes a lot to make me cry, and when he was talking about his mother with Treves's wife I lost it. There, I cried, I admit it.

This and Grave of the Fireflies are the only two films I've seen that genuinely brings me tears. I'm glad it made an emotional impact on you too. It's such a powerful film. Very underrated as well and it's in my top 10 favourite films of all time.

The book from the movie is harder to read than it is to watch in my opinion, but I was able to manage to hold back tears. I do know Bytes and the porter would be good guys to put their heads through windows. The agony Joseph Merrick must've suffered is unfathomable, I have never attended any freakshows, nor will I ever. This movie really makes you realize how terrible society can be and to treat all equally, regardless of their looks, handicaps, etc.,.

Such an awesome thread and comments. I couldn't agree more. Merrick above all had such a beautiful spirit and as it is even now, people go by how a person looks rather than what is inside of their hearts.
I will always love this film.

In spite of all the unfathomable cruelty and suffering this soul endured, he at least got to end up his last days in the finest of company and with as much comfort and care that could be afforded to him. The scene that riled me up the most, even more than the exploitation by Bytes and the night porter, was that pompous ass doctor who was opposed to Merrick staying in the hospital on a permanent basis. This ignorant, privileged, self-important prick was supposed to be a care giver, and he refused to resign himself to the needs of one of the most unfortunate men the world would have known at that time, even today. He very soon had to swallow his pride and eat humble pie, due to the presence and support of the Princess Of Wales.
Exorcist: Christ's power compels you. Cast out, unclean spirit.

This is such a powerful movie. I first saw it years ago, and I think it made me a more compassionate person. At the very least, it's made me try to be. He was such a beautiful soul, and this was such a beautiful movie. It's in my top 10 also.

I saw this movie when I was very young. I felt so bad for him 30 years ago and then watched it again (at the age of 41) and cried. A wonderful movie based upon a wonderful man. May God be with you John

Join the club. I just got back from seeing at an arthouse. There was no dry eyes in the place. When he started to cry when he met the doctor's wife and said, "I've never had such a beautiful woman treat me this way" i lost it.

No matter how many times I've watched this film, I still end up crying. It such a powerful film and depressing movie at times.
The scenes that usually get me is the scene where he says "perhaps she could love me as I am." And than Mrs. Treves end up crying.
"Oh Mr. Merrick you're not Elephant man at all, no you're Romeo. And you see Merrick start to cry.
"I am not an animal!" "I am a human being!"
These 3 scenes and the ending are heartbreaking moments. This film has to be one of if not the most emotionally moving film I've ever seen.
It's a must see for everyone.

Agree! And at the start when Treves sees Merrick for the first time and a tear rolls down his left eye. Damn.

Very sad filmtowards the end, when he yellls out, "I'm not an animal, I'm a human being.. I'm a man." That part got me. Poor guy.
I felt for him because growing up, I often got judged for my appearence and got tormented because of it, so watching this hit close to home.
