Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Final Countdown

    merry christmas — 3 years ago(February 21, 2023 08:35 PM)

Martin Sheen's character wasn't necessary. With a few changes to the script everything he did could have been handled by the captain or the Tideman guy. Nothing really happens. Some people die but the stakes are kept low. Most of the time is spent hiding out, observing from afar, doing nothing because they are confused and afraid. It seems like the story is ready to happen after Martin Sheen meets Tideman in the car. Now something interesting might happen. Tideman is going to reveal what is going on, maybe what just happened was a mere exploratory exercise, the real action is ready to start, but the movie is over. They ended up where they began except with a few dead guys and a temporal paradox.
Some questions I have. Why did the captain say Sheen had been a pain in the ass? He barely did anything. They got in one tiny argument but otherwise he just stood around doing nothing. Did they cut out a lot of scenes where he was forcefully arguing for some course of action? Why didn't Tideman say hi to the captain? Is he sore about being marooned in 1941? How did the picture of Pearl Harbor get to the Smithsonian? Did Tideman take that with him to the island? I think it stayed on the ship.
I give The Final Countdown two out of five Christmas Cheers. I would give it one but I liked looking at the airplanes.

I think the idea of this movie is intriguing but it's never fully explored and maybe that is due to budget constraints. I do like the cast. I love the score. Some of the effects are cheesy, even for 1979. And there is that nice little time travel twist at the end.
I enjoyed it overall and give it 7/10.
