      Which ones, the hawkmen?
      Because that's a bit racist.
Reality is the new fiction they say, truth is truer these days, truth is man-made

Actually large parts of the movie remind me of The Wizard of Oz, the deep colors in the sets, the journey to a new world, the very evil bad guys/girls, the adventure. If they were to remake the The Wizard of Oz yet again, this is the movie to copy.

Yes a lot of the movie seemed to be inspired by the Wizard of Oz. Also the Kala melting scene, like the wicked witch.

I also thought that the director borrowed liberally from Wizard of Oz

Yes they do, now you mention it. I think that the 1930s Flash Gordon comic strip contained flying monkeys as well as the Hawkmen. Their flight in the movie were very evocative of comic strip art. Perhaps the 1939 'Wizard of Oz' borrowed the flying monkeys from Flash Gordon images of the same decade.

I checked under the references category of Connections and Wizard of Oz is listed.
