I'm trying to see if these issues are universal amongst all version or just the 2000 DVD release. I'm only half way through the 3h39m movie and I think I'll stop because I think this has to be the worst version. I was prepared for some flaws, but this version has so many.
It appears it's in the wrong aspect ratio (?) - it doesn't fit the screen, there's about 3 inches of black on all sides of the movie; not just top and bottom, but also the sides
very grainy.
sound is bad, dialogue is lost in the mix
colors tinted out: it's so brown, it looks like it was developed in coffee.
Please tell me the Criterion version at least looks better? I'd consider finding it somehow if it was available even though Vilmos is clearly the highlight of this piece. -

Thankfully this can now be had on Blu-ray with much improved picture quality, although it still looks a bit muddy. The film was designed to look worn and aged, it doesn't quite translate to digital.
What you said about the DVD having borders on all sides, that is a non-anamorphic release, basically intended for 4:3 TV's. If you watch it on an old square TV, it should just have borders at the top and bottom.
