Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Scanners

..It's not Cronenberg's best by any means, but It still has such an interesting vibe to it. The music, the direction, it sucks me in everytime and although it can drag in a few places, I have to say that it just has something about it that keeps me riveted. The effects still hold up well and the ending is quite gruesome to watch! I enjoyed the twist and I just find the idea of Scanners to be quite fascinating. It gets a solid 7 from me, what is your take away???

I saw this in the theater back in 1981, and have watched it many times since. It has its flaws, to be sure, but overall it still fascinates me. If you haven't seen the new Criterion release, be sure to look it up.

Oh, that's the one I tracked down to watch, and it was quite rewarding! I hope to really start my collection of Cronenbergs soon, and Im pretty sure this will still make the list!
        Thanks for sharing!

1981 special effects, 1981 acting & Croniberg directing, solid 5 since it wasn't totally cringeworthy.

What the hell is "1981 acting" and who's "Croniberg"?

I think this film holds up pretty well. The whole premise of the scanners is fascinating and the exploding head gag still packs a startling punch even today. Granted, this movie suffers from Stephen Lack's weak lead performance, but fortunately Michael Ironside compensates for this as a great ruthless villain. 8 out of 10 from me.

I agree. It's got a couple of nice set pieces, but I found it pretty similar to the earlier produced and IMO better film, The Fury. 5/10
