While I love Stamp in the role, I think Connery would have been a good alternative. He has that arch way of speaking and he rarely (if ever?) plays a villain. I'd have love to have seen what he could have done with it.
If I didnt talk the way I talk I wouldnt know who the hell I am, Sean Connery on his accent

I prefer the fact that a then-unknown was cast. Only to see him again in Young Guns and Star Wars prequels.

Terence Stamp wasn't unknown when cast in the role - he was quite a British screen icon of the 60s.

Well he was fairly unknown to American audiences at that time. And with that slicked-back dark hair and beard he didn't exactly look like Billy Budd.

I don't agree. I don't think he could do the over the top lines that Stamp did as well. Then again I haven't seen a movie where Sean Connery yells at the top of his lungs either.

I think Terence Stamp was perfect as Zod. Sean Connery wouldn't have really worked as well as Zod in my humble opinion.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
