I think the girls were too old for a show where the premise was for Nell to be a surrogate mother to them. Katie was 16 when the show debuted if I'm not mistaken, which would've made her 18 by season 3. Not that an 18 year old doesn't need parental guidance, but it's a time when you're transitioning to adulthood and making your own decisions. Plus Julie was a precocious wise-beyond-her-years type character who was even more mature than Katie. If the girls were younger by a few years, perhaps the show wouldn't have needed such an overhaul after 5 seasons, even with the chief's death.

That is why they added Joey onto the show because when the kids begin to get too old they come up with some way to add a child onto the show. There are many examples of that I could name. Growing Pains did it, Family Ties, Step By Step, and even Full House did it when Michelle began to get too old. They added the twin boys to the show.

Yes I understand that teenage girls need a mother figure more than what younger girls do. Yes I noticed how many times that Nell had to bail out the girls and keep the father from over reacting about things that were related to boys. I totally agree with you there that either way a child needs a mother figure and father figure to be around to of help in raising the child with good moral values.

I remember that flashback episode. The girls were very young when they first met Nell, I think the year was 1974-ish. By the time the show started, they were already use to Nell.

They changed it. Yes. ..in the flashback episode they were really little when Nell came and the mom was dying but in the Mom's birthday episode, they said she was only deceased for 6 months. Katie was about 17 then. I think they just added the flashback episode because Sweet was dying in real life so they capitalized on his somewhat youthful appearance due to his weight loss. To me, it was a filler episode so the didn't really care if the facts were straight.

Well, after the second season, there were changes in writers and producers so maybe that accounts for it? I don't think they would do that to Dolph, by the way. And would he go along with it to begin with?

It's kind of a double bladed sword with that statement:
The
POSITIVE
thing if they had the show with younger girls, that would mean NO addition of that stupid whiney little bitch Joey would of been needed, because they already have little kids.
The
NEGATIVE
thing would be that if the girls were younger, you would have a PRE-Full House show, filled with nothing but dull cutesy cornball blandness. Just look at the scenario:
A widowed father of three little girls needs help raising his daughters.
Just a complete total catch-22 all around
