I'm not sure if this covers it. But when the racers arrive at the finish. One of them declares "It's a foot race!".
For some reason they all seem to agree to this and take off running for the finish line -

If I could just say that the fact that you tagged this with "Spoiler" makes me smile and very happy
struck me funny that a screwball comedy from 1981 would have spoilers, that no one ha seen. bravo to you sir!!
      Cheers!

It is funny to think about someone visiting this message board who hasn't seen this movie. I'm rewatching this for the first time since my comment in July of '08 and man the fact that the race marshall stresses the time clock rules only makes me cringe a little more than I should.
I know this is a screwball comedy with an All-Star cast but shouldn't someone have caught this issue along the way???
Still one of my favorites but it's just weird that the ending of the movie is COMPLETELY botched.

I noticed that flaw too. I assumed that the big traffic jam/biker gang fight meant that everyone restarted from THAT point. Since ALL the drivers were delayed by the highway work, the ones that started last would have had an unfair advantage if you kept using the original rules. Hence the cannonball simply became a dash to the finish for all, from the new starting point.

YepI noticed this when I saw it in the theaters back in 1981. Ironically enough, The Gumball Rally starring Michael Sarazin and Raul Julia a few years earlier which was based on the Cannonball race, had the same EXACT error with the two rivals neck and neck at the finish even though the start of the race also had a staggered start

That really doesn't make sense either, since there was no requirement that they all take the same route. The nature of the race would actually include dealing with traffic and finding alternate routes.
It was a case of "The Just Didn't Care" because they wanted an exciting race to the finish ending and didn't care about logic.

                To quote Dean Martin -
"thats a sh!tty way to win"

I noticed it the first time I saw the movie.
I put it down to this, even if you start at the back of the pack, it is more fun to be the first to cross the finish line.
There is a similar thing that happens in sailing. Because everyone has bots of a different size they handicap the longer yachts, but everyone takes pride in being the first across the line.

I never understood why everyone did not start at the same time. How can one group of people have 5 or 10 minutes before the other group leaves, they would oviously have a 5 or 10 head start, and unfair advatange.

Would you believe I never thought of that?
And I'm someone who sees the smallest error in films words misspelled and this and that.
I guess I was just having such a good time watching that I didn't notice. But now that you mention it Dean Martin's character is right!

I like Dave's theory. The race restarts with everyone equal after the road under construction re-opens.

yeah i always wondered that too. Still, it's just a movie, not a documentary.
